NHS Diagnosis of Essential Tremor

Before we look at treatments for essential tremor, we should consider diagnosis.

Diagnosis of Essential Tremor requires a neurologist.

It cannot be detected by blood tests or scans.

A neurologist should be able to distinguish it from other types of tremor, such as "functional tremor" or Parkinson's.

NHS Medication for Essential Tremor Treatment

The standard NHS treatment for Essential Tremor is medication, such as

Beta-blockers (e.g. propranolol).
Anticonvulsants (e.g. primidone).
Benzodiazepines (e.g. clonazepam).
Gabapentin or Topiramate.

It is important to note that medicine can have side-effects, and may not be suitable for all people at all times.

Some medication creates drowsiness.

The NHS Essential Tremor Treatment may also suggest lifestyle changes, such as:

Reducing caffeine, stress.
Reviewing current medications.
Physical therapies.
Assistive devices, such as weighted utensils or tremor cancelling technologies.

Thalamotomy (intentionally damaging the brain).

Psychological Treatments

Even though the NHS often acknowledge that stress can make Essential Tremor worse, their guidance does not appear to recommend psychological therapies.
