Is Essential Tremor Caused By Anxiety

We know that it is normal to feel shaky when stressed.

That is biological stress, which can include negative or positive experiences, exercise, injury or illness.

This is a type of psychological activation, where the body releases cortisol and blood sugars to give you more energy.

Psychological activation can also increase your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing.

However, if you don't use that energy up, it can cause the body to shake.

The big question is whether this is the same as essential tremor?

What is Essential Tremor

Essential Tremor is still very poorly understood by the medical community.

It is not really essential. That's just a confusing medical term.

Essential Tremor is a considered a neurological disorder that causes involuntary, rhythmic shaking movements, most commonly affecting the hands but also potentially impacting the head, voice, and other parts of the body.

"Neurological" just means it relates to neurons and nerves in the brain and body.

Essential Tremor is distinct from Parkinson's disease, as it is not associated with loss of brain cells or other neurological symptoms like rigidity or bradykinesia.

It is physical tremor or shaking that cannot be explained by physical assessments.

Essential Tremor is often associated with changes in the brain's cerebellum and thalamus.

But, whenever we think, the brain changes. bHowever, there is a chicken and egg situation. Those changes might because of how your brain is thinking.

Even if you're enjoying yourself at the time, there is something niggling your brain.

This is why your GP may prescribe anxiety medication such as beta blockers. For example, beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs, propranolol hydrochloride, primidone or primidone. All drugs have a risk of side effects.

We offer psychological therapies that have no know side effects.

We can help rewire your brain to release that automated response and to help find your calm.

Your brain can relax and your body can be calm.

How good would that be?

Testing Essential Tremor and Anxiety

There is an easy way to test if essential tremor are linked.

Keep a diary.

Notice when the tremor is worse.

Is it different if you're eating with people or eating alone?

Is it different if you're at home or in public

Does it vary at different times of day?

If you can identify triggers - stressors - then you know "anxiety" (biological stressors) are linked to Essential Tremor.

This means that psychological therapies, such as hypnotherapy, could be well placed to help.
