Common PTSD Trauma Symptoms

PTSD symptoms can be different for different people. They can vary over time and vary in intensity.

The symptoms can be grouped into four types:

1) Intrusive memories

This may include recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event, reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks), and severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the traumatic event.

2) Avoidance

This involves avoiding thinking or talking about the traumatic event and avoiding places, activities, or people that remind you of the traumatic event.

3) Negative changes in thinking and mood

For example, negative thoughts about yourself or others, hopelessness about the future, memory problems, difficulty maintaining close relationships, feeling detached from family and friends, lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, and difficulty experiencing positive emotions.

Changes in physical and emotional reactions

These are known as arousal symptoms, which can include being easily startled or frightened, always being on guard for danger, self-destructive behavior, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts, and overwhelming guilt or shame.
