The Feeling of Gut Feelings
Research has proven that Anxiety and IBS are closely linked.
The brain is part of the body. It controls the muscles, electical signals and hormones like cortisol.
So, when the brain is upset, the body becomes upset and inflamed.
Psychological treatments can help ease the symptoms of IBS.
How does that work?

IBS is short for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
The diagnosis of IBS means there is gut pain, but the medical world doesn't know why.
As well as pain, IBS often causes diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, discomfort, insomnia and more.
The term Syndrome simply means "a grouping of common symptoms".
So, it has nothing to do with a specific physical condition or a specific cause.
It's like saying you have backache, which could be many different things.
We hope researchers address this as soon as possible.
Anxiety may also be called worry, stress, distress, panic, fear, nervousness, or simply being busy all the time.
We may not even be aware when our subconscious is anxious.
However, it will trigger symptoms for you, like an IBS flare up when you meet friends or go shopping.
When the subconscious is distressed, it sends stress hormones into the body, like adrenaline and cortisol.
Those stress hormones create physical inflamation, muscle tension, and hyper sensitivity.
You can use your brain to lift your arm up.
Your brain also controls your breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
So, it stands to reason that your brain can also control your IBS.
This may not be the best of designs.
When the brain gets upset, it can upset the gut.
Anxiety can create IBS.
