What is PTSD? Top 5 Symptoms

What is PTSD?

PTSD is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

PTSD is a label for a group of symptoms, that have been triggered by an event or events that the emotional brain found traumatic.

Historically, it was known by terms relating to the military or battle scenarios, such as combat stress and shell shock.

However, it can happen to anyone, in any place, at any time. For example, childhood abuse, attacks or accidents.

For example, Prince Harry was diagnosed with PTSD from his childhood.

The triggering event is often meaningful to the individual, at a stressful time, and considered inescapable at that moment.

In neurological terms, the traumatic event causes potentiation of neurons within a deep part of the brain called the Amygdala.

Therapies such as Havening, Human Givens Fast Rewind, NLP, EMDR, hypnotherapy and EFT have been found to depotentiate those neurons, essentially causing the Amygdala to forget the emotional aspects of the memory.

We use many of these alternative therapies from our mind wellbeing centre for trauma in Dorking Surrey, to help release unwanted emotional memories.

Top 5 PTSD Symptoms

The distressed emotional brain can respond in a variety of ways, commonly including:

1) PTSD Emotional Memories

Unlike normal memories of events, emotional memories may be linked to flashbacks or nightmares, with upsetting images or feelings, sometimes as though the mind and body is reliving the traumatic experience all over again.

2) PTSD Physical Fear

The body is closely connected to the emotional brain and may create feelings of pain, sweating, shaking, rashes or nausea.

3) PTSD Lack of Emotion

In an attempt to protect itself, the brain may conceal emotions, so that person may feel emotionally numb.

4) PTSD Excessive Arousal

The emotional brain may be in a hyperaroused state and easily triffed, which might create feelings of anxiety, fidgets, anger, irritability, overwhelm, difficulty sleeping (insomnia) and difficulty concentrating.

5) PTSD Other Wellbeing Issues

An overactive emotional brain may also display pressure in other ways, such as depression, anxiety, addictions, drinking too much, or phobias.
