What is Hypnotherapy?

What is hypnotherapy (UK)?

Hypnotherapy is therapies that use a focused state of attention to help you control your subconscious brain.

It is a powerful range of techniques to help people change their lives.

Hypnotherapy has been used by therapists for hundreds of years.

Millions of people have been helped by hypnotherapy.

Some people ask if hypnosis is real, or even if hypnosis exists.

That's always a little strange for me to hear, as a hypnotherapist who has been helping people for years!

So, there's still a lot of confusion about what hypnosis is and how hypnotherapy can help.

So let's take a deep look at hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Keith Dewey

Defining hypnotherapy

Strangely, given that hypnosis has existing for hundreds of years, there isn't a common definition of hypnotherapy.

Let's start with some of the major organisations to see how they define hypnotherapy:

The UK NHS says that "Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to try to treat conditions or change habits.", which feels like a weak circular definition, as they don't define hypnosis. It does shows that hypnotherapy is recognised by the NHS, even if they typically have very limited training in the area. For many years, the NHS has restricted itself to medication, CBT or EMDR to try to treat conditions.

We also have the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists who state "Hypnotherapy is a type of psychological therapy that uses hypnosis to help treat certain mental and physical health conditions. It can also be used to change habits. Some therapists also use hypnosis to increase the effectiveness of other psychological treatments, or pain management."

Forbes describes hypnotherapy as "a mind-body therapy that uses hypnosis — a mental state of heightened attention, reduced awareness of the immediate environment and enhanced willingness to accept suggestions — to manage health issues like chronic pain, obesity, bedwetting and side effects of cancer treatments."

Then, the American Psychological Association seems to do particularly well in their Dictionary of Psychology, in saying "the use of hypnosis in psychological treatment, either in brief psychotherapy directed toward alleviation of symptoms and modification of behavior patterns or in long-term reconstructive psychotherapy aimed at personality adaptation or change. Hypnotherapy may use one or a combination of techniques, typically involving the administration by a properly trained professional of therapeutic suggestions to patients or clients who have been previously exposed to hypnotic induction. Although discussions of its clinical applications engender controversy, there is scientific evidence that hypnotherapy can be applied with some success to a wide range of health problems (e.g., hypertension, asthma, insomnia, bruxism), chronic and acute pain management, habit modification (e.g., overeating, smoking), mood and anxiety disorders (e.g., some phobias), and personality disorders."

So, we have some consistency and recognition of what hypnotherapy is, at a high level.

Given these definitions from major organisations, we know that:

  1. Hypnotherapy is real!
  2. Hypnotherapy exists!
  3. Hypnotherapy can help you.
