Simone Biles Mental Health Olympics

Simone Biles Mental Health Olympics Exit

It has been widely reported that Simone Biles has withdrawn from the 2020/2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, due to Mental Health concerns.

Simone had participated in her first event, the vault, but only partially performed the move and did not land well.

It was clear that her head wasn't totally in the zone, as is needed at that level of competition.

By continuing without having the necessary focus, Simone wouldn't have scored well and could even cause herself physical harm or longer term mental damage.

Simone Biles has said she wants to focus on her mental wellbeing, and that means exiting at least that part of the Olympics.

Who Is Simone Biles?

Simone Arianne Biles is a hugely accomplished American artistic gymnast.

She is regarded by many to be the greatest and most dominant gymnast of all time.

Simone Biles already has 30 Olympic and World Championship medals, and is the most decorated American gymnast.

So, she's already done more amazing things in her life than most people will in their lives!

Simone was born in Texas, US, on March 14, 1997.

What Mental Health Problem Did Simone Biles Have?

There hasn't been an official diagnosis, or labelling, of her symptoms.

But her behaviour suggests a phobic or fear response, which is normally linked to anxiety.

Phobias are processed in the deep, instinctive, sub-conscious part of the brain. Areas of the brain such as the Amygdala and Limbic system.

That part of the brain evolved billions of years ago, well before our higher logical mind which provides the thoughts that we are consciously aware of.

The Amygdala provides a very basic fight-flight response, and can flood the body with stress chemicals when it identifies a danger.

The Amygdala also works much faster and more powerfully than the logical mind.

A phobia can cause the brain and body feel like there is an immediate life or death situation, no matter what the real risk is, or what our logical mind says.

That's why mental health issues such as this are so hard to consciously "snap out of". More powerful parts of the brain are in control.

Sportsmen and sportswomen often have a wide range of specialist advisors for the physical aspects of their sports, including coaches, physiotherapists and masseurs.

However, they are not always support as well, mentally, by counsellors or psychotherapist.

Those that do have sports brain training often use Sports NLP or Sports Hypnotherapy to help adjust micro movements of their body that is controlled by the instinctive mind - fine tuning actions that we can do without consciously thinking about.

But they don't always have the broader wellbeing and mental health of the brain, to deal with issues such as phobias, anxiety, anger or traumas.
