Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy

Abraham Maslow first proposed his heirarchy of needs in 1943, before adding more detail in his 1954 book "Motivation and Personality".

It remains popular in psychology and psychotherapy today.

It was designed as a model of how humans emotionally develop and grow.

His initial view was that each of the five levels must be satisfied, in order for individuals to have motivation for the next level.

However, more recently, the few is that there is a greater overlap.

The proposal was that psychological disturbances result from needs not being met.

A model of human needs

Maslow's Hierarchy has 5 layers, represented in the diagram below.
