The Kings Speech - Therapy For Stammer & Stutter

The Kings Speech Film

The King's Speech is a 2010 film about how an Australian speach therapist, Lionel Logue, helped the UK's King George VI to manage his stammer when speaking in public, back in 1936, in London.

The film was directed by Tom Hooper, and stars Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helen Bonham Carter.

Who was Lionel Logue Speech Therapist?

Lionel Logue was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1880.

He grew up in Australia, until going on a world tour with his theatre group in 1911.

During the first world war, he was known to have treated a number of servicemen who were suffering from speech disorders linked to shell shock (now know as combat stress or PTSD.)

It is thought that he focused on the speech issues themselves, including tasks to strengthen damaged vocal chords and exercised for the lungs and diaphragm, rather than the underlying psychological trauma.

His training wouldn't have allowed him to work on the shell shock itself, so he would have been working on the symptom rather than the cause.

However, he is also known for his humour and compasion, which in itself can help with deeper psychological issues.

In 1924, Mr Logue started working at 146 Harley Street, just up the road from our FreeYourMind.UK London office. We also have an office in Guildford, Surrey, and also regularly work with clients online via Zoom.

King George VI speech difficulties

King George VI was born in 1895 and it is thought that he had difficulties with speech from a young age.

His siblings were thought to have been encouraged to ridicule his speech, which we suspect is unlikely to help the matter.

He engaged Mr Logue at a time when he was unexpectedly positioned to take the thrown.

He is known to have worked with Mr Logue everyday, for two months, and suggested that they had eighty-two appointments between October 1926 and December 1927.

In contrast, at FreeYourMind.UK, we typicaly expect to see clients between one and eight sessions.

Stammer or Stutter?

What is the difference between stammering and stuttering?

Surprisingly, these terms are used interchangeably.

The term stammer tends to be more commonly used in UK, Ireland and India.

The term stutter tends to be more commonly used in America.

This may explain why the Kings Speech film tends to refer to a stammer, rather than a stutter!

Help for Stammering or Stuttering

Few people make a conscious decision to stammer. It comes from a deeper, subconscious part of the brain.

FreeYourMind.UK therapies focus on working directly with the subconscious brain, and we have a range of techniques that may help people who experience a stammer.

Some people say that stammering is a neurological condition, which can't be addressed with therapy.

Although we'd argue that this is very much down to the type of therapy. There are over 600 therapies, many of which only focus on working with the conscious mind.

It is also interesting to note when stammering occurs.

In the film The Kings Speech, a scene shows the King lost his stammer when listening to loud music, so he couldn't hear himself.

Differences can also be noticed:

While the "human" part of the brain isn't aware of a fear, it is often possible that the "primal" part of the brain is escalating a percieved risk.

Surprisingly, there is very little formal "peer reviewed" research on the use of hypnotherapy for stammering, as a famed tool for working with the subconscious mind, yet alone more modern psychotherapy techniques that we use in London and Guildford, such as BWRT and Havening.

We're always open to research activities.
