What is Dementia and Alzheimers?

Dementia and Alzheimers are issues related to the brain.

Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning (e.g. thinking, remembering and reasoning) to a point that interferes with the individuals daily life and activities

Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia.

With Alzheimers, abnormal structures appear in the brain, which disrupt how the nerve cells work, and may eventually cause those cells to shut down.

Other forms of dementia include vascula dementia, where nerve cells die due to a lack of oxygen such as after a stroke or disease, or other abnormal changes in the brain, including Lewy bodies or frontotemporal dementia.

There are around one million people living with dementia in the UK.

Dementia can affect old and young people, but the risk increases with age.

More than 30% of people over 80 will get dementia.

Globally, 1 person is medically diagnosed with dementia every 3 seconds.

How can Hypnotherapy help Dementia?

To look at how hypnotherapy can help with dementia, we need to look at primary and secondary symptoms.

People with dementia may forget who people are, or where they are.

These are primary symptoms.

As a result of those primary symptoms, the person may also feel lost, stressed, confused, anxious, fear and worry.

These are secondary symptoms

Secondary symptoms may exacerbate the primary symptoms.

For example, you may have noticed the more distressed a person with dementia gets, the harder they find it to think.

But this happens with everyone. When we get stressed, our inner security guard takes control.

Our focus on hypnotherapy for dementia is to help with those secondary symptoms.

By reducing stress and anxiety, we can help make their life easier.

This is where hypnotherapy can help, along with various other therapies that we use at, including Havening, EFT, Meditation, NLP and Counselling.

These therapies are often used to help people relax.

They help put the rational mind back in control.

And that must be a good thing.

Our therapy services can also help family and friends dealing with their emotions related to the issue.

This may include anxiety, stress, grief, phobias or worry.

Research into Hypnosis for Dementia

Research in this area is tragically lacking, which is very strange given that hypnotherapy has been used for hundreds of years.

There is much more research, and funding for research, into medication.

We are always very grateful to hear about other research.

The main research we have found was by Dr Nightingale and Dr Duff, from 2005 to 2007.

Their reports suggest very positive opportunities:

Part of the challenge here is that hypnotherapy is actually a very wide range of techniques. Every hypnotherapist and even every hypnotherapy session will be different.

This is one reason to ensure your hypnotherapist is qualified under a Professional Standards Authority (PSA) organisation such as the National Hypnotherapy Society or CNHC.
