What Are Common Dog Phobia Symptoms?

The symptoms from a fear of dogs are often categorised into emotional, physical, behavioural and cognitive.

  1. The brain creates the emotional symptoms first. The brain's limbic system, which evolved millions of years ago to keep us safe from saber-toothed tigers, rapidly fires an alert into your body. It doesn't think logically. It's just following an incorrectly learnt response.
  2. Then come physical symptoms, as that alert fires chemicals into your body, as though you are really in danger. This will change your heart rate, breathing and muscle tension. It can leave you shaking and disoriented.
  3. Next are behavioural symptoms. Your brain will be trying to keeping you safe, often by running, hiding or freezing in terror.
  4. Finally, the cognitive symptoms, as your logical brain tries to help, perhaps by anxiously working out how to avoid going to places or seeing people, just to avoid dogs. This means that you are now running from your fear of dogs, rather than running from the dogs themselves.

All of this can create considerable anxiety and may even cause traumatic memories or PTSD.

Unlike hypnotherapy, our new techniques don't require the hypnoidal "trance" state and don't need us to spend much time talking about the problem or history, so they work particularly well online, via private video calls.
